4/29/13 Quote: "Silence is Not Golden"

During our trip to the Holocaust museum, we were able to watch an incredible on the realities of genocide.  Funny enough, Mrs. Stansbury and I both wrote down the following quote during our field trip last year so as to bring to your attention this week for our QotW!  Here is the image:

  • What does this quote mean to you?  Do you agree or disagree with it?
  • Why do you suppose that "silence" may be a more significant "crime" amongst people than actual physical violence?
  • During what moments in history/current events can you say that silence greatly hurt a group of people?
  • How does this idea of "silence" relate to the significance of the role of the bystander?
  • What is the irony seen in the picture?  (Hint: look at the Star of David)

  1. I think the quote means to speak against violence. Like to say something and do something about the violence so that it can be stopped. I think this relates to being a bystander and that’s bad because violence can be stopped but if no one stops it then it’ll keep going. So being a bystander makes the violence keep going on. I agree with the quote because being silent isn’t going to solve a problem, it only makes a problem go on. This violence, like in the Holocaust, can lead to worse problems than it started off as.

  2. When you are silent you don’t do thing to help other when they are in trouble or when they get hurt. Like when Hitler came for the Jews nobody did anything to stop him they was just silent. I agree that be silent is the great crime because if you are silent when you turn to be taking away you wonder why nobody stood up for you because everybody had been taking away so it is just you by yourself with nobody else. So don’t be that silent person stand up for what you believe in.

  3. This quote means to me that when you are silent, you are not golden or a big part of some event. You are being somewhat of a bystander. Not helping or even trying to help the people being dragged into the pummels of the camps. I suppose that silence might be more of a crime because you're not telling people or maybe you're just trying to ignore it. I would say that the Holocaust would be something that silence can greatly hurt a group of people. And how it hurt them affected the rest of the world by having a big war. The pain and the agony that the Jews and other people that Hitler didn't like, were being killed or forced to work under hard weather and maybe even hard treatment. You can all say that the Nazis are all responsible for the murder of Jews and other handicapped people. Silence isn't golden when being golden is not being silent.

  4. This quote means that even though we have a lot of violence in our world that is not the problem. People who are silent and who don't stand up for the people who are being hurt or abused are to blame. I agree with this statement because a lot of people could be alive today if people who stood by and watch it happen stood up for the people who are hurt. I think silence is a more significant crime because its just people standing by watching and letting the abuse happen. Violence could be stopped if bystanders did more then let the violence go on. Sometimes the people who are being abused reach out to the bystanders for help but they still do nothing but stare. Silence relates to bystanders because bystanders are silent and watch from afar. They faces expressionless but sometimes filled with pity, but yet they stand there watching, face nothing but stone.

  5. This quote means that bystanders hurt the victim more than person committing the crime. If it’s several bystanders than the crime will continue to be committed. If the bystanders speak up then it’ll stop. So this is basically saying that bystanders “help” the criminal in a way of silence. When the person committing the crime knows that no one will speak up then the crimes will get worst. That shows you that bystanders does play a big role in a crime. All this ties into the Nazi’s and the Jews in Germany.

  6. Silence relates to the role of bystander because when you are silenced you don't talk. Which means you don't talk for others. Which means you don't try to save other. Silence is what that lead to the killing of many Jews. Like in the quote “The greatest crime in history is not violence it is silence” This is try to say that being a bystander is more of a crime than violence. When you are being a bystander you are being a killer.

  7. The quote says “Silence is not Golden” this makes me think of bystander because a bystander is always quiet, silence. During the Holocaust every one was a bystander. In the Holocaust nobody wanted to stand up to Hitler. Everyone was being a bystander so Hitler grew power against the Jews. The quote also says “ The greatest crime in history is not violence it is silence.” This says to me that being a bystander is the worst crime. More worse than violence. The irony is that the quote has a picture of a gold star. The quote says “Silence is not Golden” as it is referring to the gold star in the picture.

  8. I think that “silence” is more significant than “crime” among people than actual physical violence because when you are silent you are letting things happen. When you are silent you let whatever is going on happen and you are not trying to do anything about it. Or you do want to do something and help out but you are scared that something is going to happen to you or you are scared of what others may think of you. So in other words you are being a bystander. And I think that we have all seen that when you are a bystander things don’t really turn out so good. Do they?

  9. I think this quote is saying, that not telling people when terrible stuff is happening and you don’t talk or say something, is just as bad as violence. I agree with this quote because, watching bad things happen to someone and not telling anyone, is just as bad as doing it to them. For example, kids being bullied at school. A lot of kids will see bullying going on and not say anything at all. That’s being just as bad as the bully. You are not helping. You are witnessing something bad happening to someone, but not helping them. “Silence” connects to bystander because, you don’t talk. You don’t tell anyone what you saw. You ignore it, and mind your own business. But once you see something happen, it’s part of your business. Some people will do the opposite, and tell someone what’s going on. Those people are doing the right thing. We need to have more people like that, to help each other. I think that if people stopped being bystanders and let people know what was happening, our environment would be safer. It would stop violence from happening as often.

  10. I do agree with this quote because it’s saying when you know something is wrong and you are a bystander and don’t do anything to stop it, it’s making it even worse. It’s the biggest crime because if someone is getting hurt and you just stand there silently watching, you’re letting something wrong happen. It’s like you’re helping someone hurt someone else. Being a bystander has been here for a long time. People are scared to stand up for what they think/know is right. People show more authority over people and that’s how it creates people being a bystander. That’s why silence is the greatest crime in history. There are a bunch of times bystanders were around. Like in the Holocaust, people on the streets would watch the Jews get beaten by the Nazis daily. They wouldn't tell them to stop or that it’s wrong. Sometimes they would even join in and help the Nazis. Something like this can really teach us to not be a bystander and even if someone has more power than you, you can try to make things right. By being a bystander it just gives the more powerful person more power to do whatever they want because no one is stopping them. Bystanders mostly always silent. Bystanders are too scared to stand up and they just watch. Those people would be saving and making things right but they don’t do anything instead. I've always wondered why bystanders don’t want to speak up. I came with 2 inferences which is, either they are too scared or it doesn't involve them so they think they don’t have to. I think even if it doesn't involve them personally, they should say something if they know it’s wrong.

  11. This quote means that silence isn’t golden because if you are silent then you can’t help people. I agree with the quote because if you are quiet then you couldn’t be helping anyone and if you don’t help them then something can go seriously wrong. Silence is more significant than a crime because if you are silent then you can create a bigger problem because the criminal might think he got away so he would keep committing the crime until he gets caught and it’s worse than physical violence because if you are silent then the physical violence gets worse.

  12. To me this quote means that you shouldn’t stay quiet when you know something is happening and its wrong. And yes I agree with it saying that the greatest crime in history is silence because if it weren’t for the silence of the people and no one standing up to Hitler the millions of Jews and innocent people would have been less. I also think that you should stick up for what you believe in and not let anybody tell you otherwise, because if you stay silent and let the violence continue it makes it worse than if you were causing the violence. The idea of silence relates to role of a bystander because if you stay silent you're not doing anything to help the victim, making you a bystander. Silence can be very harmful even if you don’t mean for it to be.

  13. This quote to me means that if you stand by and watch something happen without saying anything is just as bad as the person doing it. Just because it wasn't you but you were silent makes it your crime too.
The person doing the physical violence is bad but someone watching understands it and sees it at a different point of view. They can see the violence but they let it continue.

  14. To me, this quote means that being silent isn't always good. I agree with this quote because silence could mean a lot of things, and those things are not always good. I think that silence may be a more significant crime than actual physical violence because for example if people see something bad being done and they don’t do anything about it is not good. They stay silent, and that relates to the role of a bystander. During the Holocaust silence hurt a group of people because no one stood up for themselves or went against what the Nazi’s said and were doing so the Jews had to go through rough times.

    ReplyDelete
  15. This quote means that being silent about what you see and knowing it is wrong but not to doing anything about so basically being bystander is actually worse than violence. I agree with this quote because how it says that silence is worse than violence and I think the same thing because being silent is being a bystander and being a bystander means you know that something wrong is going on and you know that the right thing to do is to say something and do something about it about it but instead you are just watching that wrong thing happen and that is worse than violence. I think that it was in the Holocaust was the time that people were really affected and hurt by silence because during that time all the Jews needed someone to stand up for them and help them but not a lot stood up for others because they were just silent because they were afraid.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think that it means that if you see something that someone or a group of people is doing something wrong don't be silent speak up.Because of people being silent these people or person have committed mass murder on people because others have not stood up and help.Because of silence thousands and thousands of people have been murder. But what will happen when its your turn and everybody is gone because you were silent

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think that silence is a worse crime because if you are silent and you're a bystander and you let things happen they will happen. I wonder why people be bystanders and just let crimes happen? During the Holocaust silence was a big part of it because if people would have talked and tried to help more i think a lot of live would have been saved. Some people did try to help when they were resistance fighters and i know that they helped save lives, but still the group was hurt because more people didn’t try to help. Silence relates to the bystander because if your are silent your are a bystander. Being silent and seeing something that isn’t right and not telling anyone is a bystander, just like what happened in Rwanda everyone was silent so it made them a bystander.

    ReplyDelete
  18. This quote means to me that if you are silent, then you really are not helping anybody that is getting harmed. I agree with this quote because the people that are being silent, aren't really doing anything to help anyone. Being silent in a situation where something bad is happening, is being a bystander because you aren't saying anything about that to anyone in charge. During moments of history I can say that silence hurt a group of people. Let’s take the Holocaust for example. All of the Jewish population were getting ¨bullied¨ by the Nazis. The people that knew what was going on and chose not to say anything, help the Nazis be able to keep the mass murders going. The bystanders of what happened could have told somebody with more control, and then the person with higher power could have done something to put a break in it. Being silent can really hurt people because nothing is being done to stop them getting physically hurt.

  19. Silence: The quote “silence is not golden” means that being silent is not golden or good. I agree with the quote because in the story The Hangman the worst crime of all was not murder but being a bystander and being silent is being bystander. I think that silence can be a worse crime than physically hurting someone because if someone knew Hitler’s plan of the Final Solution and told someone it could have been avoided. I can relate this to the Boston marathon bombing because the brothers probably told at least one person and if that one person would have spoken up then maybe the bombing could have been avoided. When the quote says “ The greatest crime in history is not violence, its silence” I think that to be silent is to be a bystander.

    ReplyDelete
  20. -Silence: I agree with this quote, Silence is the most significant crime because When you are silent you don’t express your opinion on things or stand up for someone or something. If you are silent you can’t tell someone no, and explain why its bad or stop something bad from happening. When something bad is about to happen and you are silent about it then it could become worse and worse and soon more people could die because you were silent. A bystander doesn’t stop what's going on they just sit back and watch silently or else they're not a bystander. I history when Hitler came to power and started to hurt the Jews most Germans just followed along or just stared and said nothing bad about it. They were silent and because of it Hitler was able to continue his plans to kill all Jews.

  21. This quote means that staying quiet and not standing up for yourself or for others is worst than any other crime or thing to do. I think that silence is a more significant crime than violence sometimes due to not standing up or helping others who are in need. During the Holocaust silence hurt them because the Jews didn't stand up for themselves or let the world know what was happening when it was first starting, if they had said something when it was just beginning, when their rights were being taken away, maybe the Nazis wouldn't have walked all over them. Being silent and being a bystander can be the same thing at times. Bystanders just watch horrible things that are happening and never say a word or stand up for others, and staying silent also means you aren't saying anything. Staying silent could cause things to get worse because people figure that you won’t say anything so they can do whatever they want no matter what the problem is.

  22. To me this quote means that people should always speak out and never be a silent bystander. Yes I do agree with it because bystanding is never okay, bystanding itself is a crime. To me this quote is saying to stand up for what you believe in and that you should always speak out and give your opinion and try to do something that would make a positive impact. Silence definitely hurt people in the Holocaust because the Jews just let the Nazis boss them around made them obey authority. Also I can disagree with what I just said because the people who did fight back and voiced their opinion received a very cruel punishment. There are times when someone can say more by being silent. Too many times we could be guilty of saying too much.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I would say during WW2 times because many people were killed because other people did not speak out. All those people that did not speak out are known as bystanders. If people were to speak out by that time then less people would have been killed for fight back. Jews were hurt big time do to starting with all the propaganda then killed because people were against them. I can’t blame people who were silent because if they were to speak out then they would also be killed. The Nazis caused all the killing because people were not to speak out so that gave them the right and power.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with this quote a lot, speaking up for your beliefs is so important in today’s society, because we know that without speaking up, our ideas and beliefs will get bulldozed into the road of not getting a chance. Without speaking up, no one can understand the power one can have and the movement that can drive a nation to excel to the top. Silence is the silent crime, its not physically doable, but its mentally noticed. The silence is what brought us to war, and no one had the ounce of courage to speak up for what you believe in. Silence is not always golden, in most cases it’s never golden, because something as valuable as gold should never be compared to the weakness of a society.

  25. I agree with this quote because I feel like the the picture is relating to the people during the Holocaust that were doing nothing about the Jews being murdered by the Nazi soldiers. Maybe because many of those people were bystanders. They did nothing to help the Jews and the others that were being killed, while only some of them did help the Jews. And bystanders are quiet, they don't say anything about it, and that was the wrong thing to do, was to just watch it happen. And that’s what the quote was relating to, “Silence is not golden.”

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think the irony in this picture is that the quote says silence is not golden and the star is gold. The star is gold because a lot of Jews were silent during the Holocaust. Jews were silent because they were scared of what would happen if they talked. Silence can relate to a bystander because a bystander is silent they don’t do anything to help, they just watch and tell no one what’s going on. I agree with this quote because many people were bystanders during the Holocaust and didn’t say or do anything.

  27. The quote, “The greatest crime in history is not violence, it is silence. Silence is not golden.” means to me, that when someone acts quiet, they don’t make any attempt to talk to someone else about anything because they are afraid of what will happen to them, they are afraid of getting hurt. I agree with the quote, because at times, silence can be devastating and scary. I feel like sometimes, yes, “silence” can be a more hurtful “crime” to people because it leaves things unsaid/in fear, of what really is going on. For instance, not a lot of people at the time outside of Europe at the time, even knew the Holocaust was going on because no one would talk about things going on over there other than WWII, no one knew what was happening to Jews over there, because no one was talking about it, none of the Jews. Being silent during and when involved in bad situations, would be making you a bystander, not talking about it, could make you be held responsible for what happened because if they had told they wouldn’t have been held responsible anymore, and no one would have been hurt. The irony of the picture behind the quote, is a picture of the Star of David, it is golden, with the word “Jude” written on it. The picture is ironic because, it is golden, and people say that silence is golden, so it is referring to the Jews of the Holocaust, and that they were silent during the Holocaust, they never tried to stand up and or tell someone, because they were afraid, and that’s what the quote means to me, and what’s so ironic about the picture.

    ReplyDelete
  28. This means to me that in a lot of situation a lot of people don’t speak up for what they know is bad. I agree that “ Silence is never golden” Because if you are silent you can’t help the fact that a lot of people are going through a lot and you can’t help them. Physical can leave a scar but can heal within a certain amount of days, But to be scared the rest of your life and not speak up it can hurt you for the rest of your life. During the Holocaust the Nazis really hurt the Jews physically and emotionally, and a lot and a certain amount of people that thought this was wrong didn’t speak up or really gave their opinions about how they felt.

    ReplyDelete
  29. To me this quote means being silent is not the right thing to do, you should voice your opinion and stand up for what you believe is right. I agree with this quote because seeing something, knowing its wrong and still not doing anything is just a non-violent way of doing something just as bad as being violent. Silence hurt a large group of people during the Holocaust. There were not enough people to say that they thought killing millions of people was wrong even though they did not agree with it. Being silent can do more damage than being violent. Watching someone get bullied and not doing anything is just as bad as being the bully. This idea of ¨silence¨ relates to the significance of the role of a bystander because its just as bad to not do anything, than to do something negative. Bystanders play a part in the crimes also.

    ReplyDelete
  30. This quote means that not acting or speaking out to something bad is just as well a crime as an ordinary crime.I strongly agree that ¨silence is not golden¨ because if silence is broken it can most likely help someone or something and bring justice to the situation. Silence is a lot like being a bystander because you are just sitting there not helping not pleading for help asking the person to stop your just letting what is happening happen. Bystanders keep there mouth shut and try to hold in what they have just witnessed just like silence you don´t speak out on the situation that occurred. I think silence can hurt and affect a person where as if you are not silent you can help out a person.

    ReplyDelete
  31. What this quote means to me is that many people do get hurt or even die because of violence but if it was going on where a lot of people what's happening why won’t they stop it. Yes, I know that many of people were afraid but if they won’t speak up that can cause many more deaths than the already are. So, yes I do agree with the quote because if you see what happens why don’t you speak up and save yourself and many others that are in the same situation as you.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This quote means that even though we have a lot of violence in our world, that is not the true problem. The people that are silent and don’t stand up for the people getting hurt, abused, and bullied are the ones that should take the blame. I agree with this statement because a lot of people could feel so much better or even be alive if someone standing on the sidelines would’ve spoken up against the harm that was being done. Whether it was physically, or mentally. I think silence is a more significant crime because it’s just peers, strangers standing there watching the harm be done. People who are being abused, or bullied look for help from the bystanders and the bystanders do nothing but stand there and watch. Silence relates to bystanders because bystanders are silent and do nothing but watch what happens. They have no emotion, they just stare silently.Sometimes you can see their faces or eyes have a traces of emotion yet, they do nothing but stand there.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Silence has hurt groups of people in many of events because they won’t find any information about an event that happened if people stay silent. Silence relates to being a bystander because if you know about something and stay silent about its the same as a bystander because you're not doing anything about it to help. This quote means to me that it is worse to stay quiet because when you say something about it it can actually help. If you stay quiet nobody will know about it so you will be making things worse for others. I agree with this quote because violence isn’t always really bad. When a murder happens and you know who did it and don’t say anything how is that helping.

    ReplyDelete
  34. A moment in history when silence can hurt a lot of people was when we had a moment of silence for the people in nine eleven. During this moment people around the world were depressed, because it was a point in time that shocked the whole world. Some people who had family at The World Trade Center, were really upset, because some of their family members might have died, or maybe even some of their friends who were their could either got really injured, or killed. This moment of silence hurt lots of people, even people who didn’t know anyone who was there that day. Every time there's a moment of silence for this point in time, lots of people are hurt.

  35. 4/29 “Silence is not gold”
This quote means that being a bystander is a crime because you're not doing anything about what the bully or the person is doing to the victim. And it also means that if you're being a bystander you're just as guilty as the suspect that did the crime. Because you had the choice to stop it but you just sat watched the suspect commit a crime.

One moment in history that gave an example of this quote was obviously the holocaust. Because in the holocaust there were people in different countries who could've done something and they just sat back and watched this genocide happen,The Jews could of done more of resistance but they didn't which made me kinda mad because only a couple of people resist the Nazi will.

    ReplyDelete
  36. What this quote means to me is that people shouldn't be quiet all the time, like it isn't right to be silent while things are happening around you that are real life events. I do agree with this quote because if something that’s not right is happening around you, and you aren't doing anything about it, you’re just as bad as the person doing it. I think that “silence” is more of a significant “crime” amongst people than actual physical violence because you’re just letting it happen, and you’re not involved with it, so it’s” is more of a significant “crime” amongst people than actual physical violence. During the Holocaust, people were payed off to look away, so this hurt many groups of people during that time period. The idea of "silence" relate to the significance of the role of the bystander because without silence, there are no bystanders to stand aside and watch.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This means that silence is more powerful than violence because you can stop a lot of bad things from happening. And if silent all the time and don’t speak up for yourself or others you are a bystander. Just like when someone is getting bullied and you are just watching and you don’t do anything then you are not helping the victim but if you get help and speak up you will be able to help that person. I do agree that silence is a crime because if your silence you are holding back a lot of information or you are not helping anyone out. So violence can be stop if you're not silence but the reason why people are violent its because people are silent and they get away with it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think in this quote "silence" means "not taking action." Words are not as powerful as actions. Actions do not have to be violent. There was a lot of dialogue in the United States about what the Nazis were doing before we ever took any action. So we were not silent about it but a lot of Jewish citizens were still being murdered in Germany.

There are plenty of actions we can do today that make our country/city/school a better place. Some are as simple as seeing a less popular kid at the school dance and taking the time to dance with them because no one else will. That action is more powerful then telling your friends you feel sorry for the said kid. Another action can be as big as spending all your free time to raise awareness about autism.
